Nicholas Grimshaw and his Tribute to Industry at the Vitra Campus

Few architectural projects express the union between functionality and innovation as well as the first buildings signed by Nicholas Grimshaw at the iconic Vitra Campus, in Weil am Rhein, Germany.

In 1981, just six months after a major fire hit Vitra’s premises, the first building designed by Grimshaw was erected – a true ode to engineering, industrial precision, and brand identity. Financed with insurance funds and designed using prefabricated elements, the building stands out for its horizontally curved façade in corrugated aluminium, reflecting both the functional spirit of industrial production and Vitra’s commitment to advanced technical solutions.

Architecture at the service of production — and aesthetics

The first building not only returned its production space to Vitra in record time, but also marked the beginning of a lasting dialogue between architecture and design on campus. With an interior that houses production areas and two showrooms, Grimshaw transformed an emergency need into a landmark project for contemporary industrial design.

In 1983, Grimshaw signed his second building on the campus, which expanded the manufacturing facilities and included what would become, years later, one of Vitra’s most emblematic workspaces: the Citizen Office.

About Nicholas Grimshaw

Born in London in 1939, Nicholas Grimshaw studied architecture at prestigious British institutions such as the College of Art School of Architecture and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in Edinburgh. A member of the Royal Institute of British Architects since 1967, his academic career includes stints at the Bartlett School and the University of Cambridge, where he held distinguished chairs as a visiting professor.

Over the decades, Grimshaw became one of the leading names in high-tech architecture, having been elected president of the Royal Academy in 2004. His designs are marked by bold structural solutions, clever use of industrial materials and a meticulous eye for efficiency and durability.

Nicholas Grimshaw’s famous works

Nicholas Grimshaw’s career goes far beyond the Vitra building. Throughout his career, he has designed iconic projects in different countries, always with a futuristic, technological approach that is deeply connected to functionality. Discover other remarkable creations by this visionary architec:

Eden Project (1995–2001) – Cornwall, England

One of Grimshaw’s most famous works, the Eden Project is made up of huge geodesic dome-shaped biomes that house different ecosystems. Located in a former clay mine, the complex is a symbol of sustainability, environmental education and innovation in architecture.

Waterloo International Terminal (1988–1993) – London, England

Built to accommodate Eurostar, Waterloo International Terminal is a stunning example of Grimshaw’s engineering. With its undulating glass and steel roof, the station combines visual lightness with complex and efficient structural solutions.

Thermal Baths at Bad Blumau (with Friedensreich Hundertwasser) – Austria

In this collaborative project with Hundertwasser, Grimshaw combined his high-tech language with the Austrian artist’s organic and colorful style. The result is a unique spa space that harmoniously integrates nature, art and well-being.

Southern Cross Station (2006) – Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne’s railway station has been given a new identity by Grimshaw. Its undulating roof, reminiscent of sand dunes, is not just aesthetically pleasing: it allows natural ventilation and improves thermal comfort for users.

National Space Centre (2001) – Leicester, England

Dedicated to space exploration, the National Space Centre impresses with its translucent tower and futuristic-looking architecture. The structure houses interactive exhibits, a planetarium and educational areas, and is one of the landmarks of scientific architecture in the United Kingdom.
